How to convert HEIC to JPG on Android
Modern Android reads HEIC fine in the gallery, but sharing and editing apps often do not. The gap between 'can view' and 'can use' is where most Android HEIC problems live.
Where Android actually stands
Android has decoded HEIF at the platform level since Android 9, and phones from Android 12 onward generally show HEIC photos in the gallery without complaint. Samsung goes further and can capture in HEIF itself, under Camera settings as a high-efficiency option.
What has not caught up is the long tail of apps. Third-party editors, older social apps, document scanners, printing services and plenty of upload forms in mobile browsers still expect JPG. So the photo displays perfectly in your gallery and then cannot be attached to the thing you needed it for.

- Use the Files app for a quick look
Most Android 12 and later builds open HEIC in the system Files app and gallery. If it opens there but not in the app you actually need, the file is fine — that app simply has no HEIC decoder.
- Convert in the browser for a batch
Open the converter in Chrome, tap the drop zone, and pick your photos through the file picker. Everything is processed on the phone with no upload. Keep the screen on, since Android suspends background tabs and will interrupt a long batch.
- Fix it at the source if the files keep coming
If the HEIC files arrive from an iPhone user, ask them to change Settings → Camera → Formats to Most Compatible, or to share via a route that converts automatically — email and most messaging apps both do.

A note for Samsung owners
If your own Galaxy is producing HEIF files that other people cannot open, the setting is in the Camera app: Settings → Advanced picture options → HEIF pictures. Turning it off returns you to JPG. Storage use roughly doubles, which is the same trade iPhone users make.
