Live Photos lose their movement when converted
A Live Photo is a HEIC still plus a separate MOV video. Converters see only the still, which is why the movement vanishes and there is no setting that brings it back.
What a Live Photo actually is
Not one file. When you capture a Live Photo, iOS writes two:
- IMG_1234.HEIC — the still frame, which is what you see in the album grid.
- IMG_1234.MOV — roughly three seconds of video at reduced resolution, with audio.
The Photos app pairs them by filename and metadata and presents them as a single item. Copy them out of Photos and you get two separate files, which is why people frequently find mysterious MOV files alongside their photos after a transfer.
So converting a Live Photo to JPG converts the still only. The MOV is a different file and no image converter can reach it. There is no setting to change because there is nothing to change.
Keeping the movement
- Export as a video
In Photos on iOS, select the Live Photo, tap Share and choose Save as Video. You get an MP4 that plays anywhere, with the audio intact.
- Export as a GIF
Open the Live Photo, swipe up to reveal the effects, and choose Loop or Bounce. Sharing that version produces an animated file that works in messaging apps and on the web.
- Keep both files together
If you want the original, copy the HEIC and the MOV as a pair and keep the filenames matched. Import them into Photos on another Apple device and the pairing is reconstructed.
- Pick a better still frame first
Tap Edit, then the Live Photo icon, and drag along the frame strip to choose a different key photo. Setting a sharper frame before converting produces a much better JPG.

Turning Live Photos off. If you never use the motion and would rather not manage two files per photo, the yellow Live Photo icon at the top of the Camera app toggles it. To make that stick between sessions, go to Settings → Camera → Preserve Settings and turn on Live Photo. Otherwise it re-enables itself every time you open the camera.
